The Jacquard card duplicating machine from the 1920s served the purpose of mechanically producing Jacquard cards (punch cards). In Jacquard weaving, the loom pulls up the designated warp threads individually, controlled by one punch card per weft row, thus enabling the weaving of large patterned fabrics. Today the Jacquard card duplicating machine is an exhibit in the LWL-Industrial Museum Bocholt Textile Factory. It is used for presentation purposes.
Composed of a hole-punching machine and an upper-shed Jacquard machine as a duplicating device, the machine is able to punch a whole card in one operation. In order to do this, the blank card sheet is placed between the outer plates, which have holes in them. When the plates are pressed against the horizontal die-stamps, the appropriate holes are punched into the cardboard card. The individual cards are then connected into an endless chain.
The sounds of the Jacquard card duplicating machine are made when the holes are punched into the cards.
