The history of cable ferries date all the way back to 13th century. In Finland ferries have been around since the 16th century.
Cable ferry is a transport device between two shores that are connected with a wire. The ferry uses the cable as a guide. In the past manual labour was used to move the ferry but the engines and electric motors have been used for a long time to move the ferry from one shore to another.
In Finland and Europe in general, they are trying to replace ferries with bridges where-ever that is possible, the main reason being that they create traffic jams.
The ferry in the recording connects two towns of Liperi and Rääkkylä in North Carelia Finland. Current ferry has been operating since 1974.
