Chain forging

The sounds of chain forging using a forge hammer and anvil were recorded during a presentation in the Chain Forging Museum in Fröndenberg. They form an acoustical picture of the practice of the blacksmith: first, he heated the material in the forging furnace and then shaped it on the anvil with his forge hammer. The interplay of the hammer strokes, the piece of metal being shaped and the anvil create the typical forging sound.
