City of Tampere Main Library Metso

Main library Metso is one of Tampere’s most famous landmarks. Unique building is located in Hämeenpuisto park in central Tampere. It is one of the most frequently visited libraries in Finland.

Metso was designed by architect couple Raili and Reima Pietilä. It is an example of organic architecture. From above the building looks like a wood grouse with its mating display.

Libriaries in general are thought to be quiet places. At least they used to be. As you can hear from the audio, there are multiple sources of sound to be heard: people chatting and walking around, digital beeps of the queuing machines and the librarians pushing book trolleys to name a few.
